HCM Foundation was recently awarded the CHASE award by Fox Chase Cancer Center. This award stands for Courage, Heart, Advocacy, Service, Education and recognizes those who go above and beyond in their commitment to improve the lives of cancer survivors and their supporters. We want to thank everyone who supports our mission and allows us to genuinely be there when families need it most.
It is our mission to provide opportunities and financial support to cancer patients, survivors, and their families. We are committed to enhancing the quality of life for those afflicted with cancer by connecting those in need of assistance with those willing to offer support.
During the next few years we want to grow HCM into our surrounding local communities and build long lasting, comforting, and meaningful relationships that will support those who are significantly impacted by cancer.
The back story to HCM
The HCM Foundation was founded by Mike Marsteller in October 2009 and was created based on the learning experiences he took away from the impact cancer had on his family. In 1983 Mike turned one year old and his father, Harvey C. Marsteller (HCM), lost his battle with colon cancer at the early age of 30. What was a perfectly healthy young family with a husband, wife and two young children all of a sudden became a single parent household because cancer entered their lives. When Mike’s father was struck by cancer, it struck his entire family and the extended network surrounding them. His Mother was faced with many decisions with the biggest dilemma of raising two children, ages one and five, without a spouse. How would there be time for her to grieve the loss of her lifelong partner – the person she thought she would spend the rest of her life with – when she must continue to work, provide and raise two children, keep up with the household chores, and still continue on the path to achieve her own goals? Family and friends certainly played a tremendous role, but in due time they must continue with their own life and contribute to raise their own children and achieve their own goals.
When Mike was in his mid 20s, he started to listen to more and more stories of cancer significantly impacting families in many different ways. Some of which were very similar to how cancer impacted his family. Identifying with each scenario, it was time to do something. It was finally time to do more than just say, “I understand and I wish there was something I could do to help.” It was time to wish harder, develop ideas, and create action in order to build a stable Foundation where the support for families who are significantly impacted by cancer will be support that stays with them for their entire lifetime. It is support for Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Grandfather, Grandmother, Friends, and Community. We will bond together and BE THE STRONG LINK that will never be broken!
Board of Directors:
Mike Marsteller, Founder & President
Mike is a professional youth motivational speaker and teen mentor, teaching young people how to turn their biggest obstacles into their greatest opportunities. In his free time he enjoys riding his bike and running. As the founder of HCM Foundation, Mike is passionate about helping those afflicted with cancer.
“Ever since I was about 10 years old, I wished there was something I could do for people afflicted with cancer. When my Dad passed of colon cancer, I was so young and that experience has taught me a lot about the type of person that I want to be and how I want to empathize with others. Through the foundation I am able to work with like minded people and put our learning experiences to good use and help others. As HCM Foundation continues to grow in our community, it is a great thing for everyone involved including those who receive help and those who donate help. I am truly blessed to be in the presence of those around me. If it were not for them, HCM would not be here.”
Paul Aemisegeo, Board Member
Paul is a veteran entrepreneur. He brings much wisdom to HCM through his business experience and active lifestyle competing in triathlons and race directing.
“The reason I want to be involved in the HCM Foundation is because I have been blessed in my life by people that have provided support and have helped steer me in the right direction and given back to me in ways that are impossible to repay. I would like to do the same for others through the HCM Foundation. HCM will allow us to directly impact the children and family members that have been touched by cancer by providing them support. Everyone needs a support system, especially in tough times.”
Carolyn Brzezicki, Board Member
Carolyn is a registered nurse. She works for a non-profit company whose mission is to help people make better health decisions. She is an active bereavement support group volunteer with a local hospice.
“I think we all seek ways to do good in the world, and being involved with HCM Foundation does just that. It is an honor to be part of an organization that can so directly and immediately help our local friends and neighbors.”
Mike Carriglitto, Board Member
Mike currently works at BQ6 Media Group as the Vice President of Client Services. Previous work in the social work field combined with the love of fitness and running, Mike brings experience and enthusiasm to HCM.
“I want to be a part of HCM because of the impact cancer has on the patient and how dramatically it impacts family members as well. I have witnessed and been touched personally by cancer over the years and HCM’s “grass roots” approach will have an immediate impact on the quality of life of so many families within our community! Although research is utmost important to battle this disease, families need help now, while research continues. I believe fully in the HCM mission because it provides this type of support and impact as well as supports a more physically fit community!”
Christopher Garges, Board Member
Chris holds a Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Penn State University and has been serving the Lower Saucon Community as a Zoning Officer for over 5 years. Chris has directed races, volunteered at many events and brings his experience, motivation and enthusiasm to help make HCM the strongest link.
“There is so much negativity in this world, so much grief and pain. Both my family and my brother’s family have been affected by cancer and the loss of loved ones. The HCM Foundation allows me to use my love of training and racing to do more than honor our loved ones, I can personally be involved with being a positive impact on a local family that is afflicted with cancer.”
Craig Sheckler, Board Member
Craig is the owner and head coach of Endurance Multisport. He brings his passion for helping others to HCM Foundation.
“Cancer affects practically every human being, directly or indirectly, at some point in life. As a child, I witnessed my mother wage a successful, recurring battle with melanoma. As a young adult, I watched helplessly as she struggled through chemo treatment and eventually lost her war with lymphatic cancer. My association with the HCM Foundation now gives me the ability to help others cope with their own personal experience with the disease. HCM Foundation is unique because it allows donors to become part of the personal support system for local cancer patients and their families. I am delighted to be involved with this very worthwhile, heartfelt organization.”
